Magnetism

Friday, February 21st, 2020

You are walking into a room full of strangers in a business social setting, here is 5 default questions my most successful clients invariably ask their colleagues:

  1. Who do you seek to be a person of tremendous interest to? (name, title, organisation, interests)
  2. What precisely are you doing to maximise their interest in, and eagerness to meet you? (credibility, trust, seen as a peer)
  3. How do you plan to draw them into your ideas and thinking? (intellect, social skills, use of language)
  4. What would make you immediately useful and relevant to them? (value, ideas, contacts)
  5. What would make them do what you want them to do, now and in the future? (self-interest)

Awards

Monday, August 19th, 2019

Contrary to allot of bogus advice given out by Awards Hosts (polishing presentations), if you want to win an award, start by focusing on those judging the award and their subjective needs. Having judged many competitions around the world here is, a quick primer:

Q: What are the judges’ probable emotional and psychological needs in determining the winner?

A: They want to feel a personal and emotional connection with the winner, their story and their beliefs. They want to convince themselves and their colleagues that they were smart in selecting the “right” winner. They want to look good in front of their key constituents (boss, employees, clients, business partners, investors, media and so on). They want to be invited back.

How can you best ensure those outcomes for the judging panel?
